A Bridge Too Far
Released On 23rd Aug 2024
Seven Bridge 10k
From Linda: Once upon a time in a far far land....(OK Wales and only this morning) 5 of us travelled to do the Severn Bridge 10k. Joanna Samuel was the driver (as usual!), along with Lesley Nesbitt Margarita Moore Ann Grace and myself. We left very early and arrived to meet Anita Farquhar Rufus at the car park. We were parked and directed near the entrance as Jo drives a huge truck ....more to this story to follow. So we wonder up to HQ as we needed to collect numbers, change a T shirt which was too small, go to the loo etc. You know the drill. Wonder back to the car to drop off bags, back to HQ..another loo stop and walked miles to the start half way over the Severn Bridge. Without being ready the race started without any warning (we probably didn't get there on time for the race briefing). The rain held off but boy how the wind didn't send us flying over the motorway I have no idea. My legs felt like they were going to be blown away. So we head over towards England and then headed right towards the other bridge on quiet pathways and side roads for 2.5 miles then turned around. The route was full of short hills, so we all knew what we were in for on our return. Marshals were brilliant. Very encouraging. Got back on the Severn Bridge and ran the whole length of it and trying to stay upright was a challenge again with the wind. Slightly running into the wind. That Bridge went on for miles! Finally turned off heading towards the finish. One nasty hill to contend with before the final descent and it was all over. Well supported race, loads of runners. Ann was 1st Yeovil lady over the line and got 1st in her age category, I was 2nd, followed by Jo, Lesley and Marguerita. Anita came in before Marguerita. We all did very well and pleased with our times and thankful the rain held off. Anyway headed back to the trunk and Jo managed to run over and ruin a few traffic cones as she drove off. Wouldn't have minded but we all said we better be aware they were there before we drive off. Anita had a great laugh whilst she was driving passed us as I was pulling the debrie from under the trunk. Anyway another pit stop at the service station. Rude not to get a burger for the journey!
From Anne: An amazing group of Yeovil Town RRC women done the seven bridge 10k today and wow what a 10k. We warmed up by waking 20 minutes to the start then of we go ,there were hills after the bridge but the worse had to be the wind on the bridge I don't think the run was the challange staying on your feet was . We all finished with an amazing time so well done ladies and I even managed to win first lady in my age category super proud. Thank you Joanna Samuel for taking us i'm so grateful.
Weekend Running
From June: Good turn out at Cavity Trays this morning despite the rain. Great running from all. Thanks Tim and Sharon.
From Mark: Sunday Slow and Steady. Lynne led an enjoyable run from Ilchester this morning with some nice off-road bits.
Park Runs
From Mags: Tralee parkrun for me and Leigh Parsons this morning. Leigh's first ever parkrun but he forgot his barcode!
From Jo: Rain does not stop play for us!! Fantastic morning with all of us running well at Weymouth parkrun followed by a few of us playing around like kids in the sea bobbing up & down amongst the waves. The morning got even better as I got home to find my amazing husband, who has not only cooked another 2 quiches for later & cleaned the kitchen, but made me a plate of fresh pancakes to eat.
PUB RUN – EAST LAMBROOK – (22ND AUGUST 2024)
From Mark: Tonight we returned to East Lambrook after a gap of more than 5 years. We last had a pub run there on Thursday 27th June 2019. It was a good choice as the food afterwards was good and plentiful.
The not so fast group (Nick, JC, and myself) ran an anti-clockwise loop. Leaving the pub we ran north eastwards to Gawbridge Bow, where we turned left and continued up to Kingsbury Episcopi. We then headed south westwards to Stembridge and rested outside the Rusty Axe. We continued south westwards along New Cross Hill. Turning left at New Cross (just north of West Lambrook), we then headed back towards the pub. I changed the original plan, and decided to turn right and run down the lane towards Mid Lambrook, where we could turn left and run off-road for a while. So the last leg was off-road across fields and along a track back to East Lambrook. It’s always useful to carry an OS map.
In the pub, we were joined by Phil, Ann, and Guy for the meal.
