Totton 10km
From Terry: Totton 10km, pleased with a comeback pb, super event on the Copythorne Carnival course slightly amended. Good turn out celebrating Totton Running Club 40th anniversary. Happy with 52.33 chip time on an undulating course of 2 laps.
Weekend Running
From Ali: Sunday 10K group this morning with a loop around Yeovil in the morning sunshine.
From Mags: Another great route by Andy this morning, with refreshing stop for Ash.
From Lesley: Fifteen of us in the Sunday run group took advantage of the dry, sunny morning and did a part trail and part road route from Goldenstones to Montacute and back via Roman Villa, Thorne and roads back to Goldenstones. Thanks all for the company.
100 Marathon Club AGM Marathon
The 100 Marathon Club always put on a Marathon before their AGM, this year it was held just outside Exmouth along an old Railway Line then heads out to Budliegh Salterton. It was 8 laps for a marathon and anymore for an Ultra, as I needed an Ultra for my 12th Super Slam Hat I did 9 laps.
The Company that put the race on are Running in Devon (RED), theses are very friendly races, traffic free and long cut offs and you can do as many laps as you want, so good for those that want to races in for Hats.
Et ego Londinium Vici
From Yunmi: Today up in The Big Smoke, Nolan, Sue, Elie and I swam 2 miles in lake Serpentine to complete The London Classics - The London Marathon, Ride London 100 and the two-mile event at Swim Serpentine.
It was a bright chilly morning. The water temperature was 15 degrees, but luckily the sun was shining all day. Nolan and I were in the red wave starting at 9:20am, followed by Sue at 12:50pm and brave Elie swam with the fast(& last)wave at 4:30pm.
We were ecstatic with our achievements big smiles on our faces and receiving a magnificent medal, engraved with the words Et ego Londinium vici(I too have conquered London). London Classics is a worthwhile challenge to stretch the limits and hope many of you get to try this.
Park Runs
From Jo: Had a really lovely morning out in the sunshine. We started with Killerton parkrun, a fist for most of us. A lovely run on National Trust land where everyone was so friendly. I know it is a 5k but this one did feel like a long 5k & those couple of steep ups were not what I would call “gently undulating” as we had been told . Then we headed to Otter Vally Ice Cream & Field kitchen where a great breakfast was consumed by all. Then the dilemma - how much ice cream we had room for!!!!! Despite having a milkshake with my meal, I managed two scoops in a tub fairly comfortable. Helen Nesbitt went for one scoop in a cone & I think (well we all know….) regretted not going for two!!!! Tony Nesbitt having declined ice cream changed his mind as he sat watching us all tuck into ours . A really fantastic morning with great company. Thanks to Tony for driving & thanks all for brill company.
From Claire: A chilly but beautiful morning for some Parkrun tourism at Poole Parkrun. 836 runners, super fast 15.00 mins for the first runner home. Super friendly and very enthusiastic and encouraging marshals!
From Linda: Very sunny Frogmary Green Farm parkrun this morning. Conditions were perfect. 50th parkruns for Taryn, Katie Stokes and Kelly Rowsell . Thank you to all the marshals for your support.
From Trevor: Great field Parkrun with Amanda & Malcolm.
From Simon: A good YTRRC turnout for Shepton Mallet Parkrun
Weston Prom 5m
From June: A trip to the Weston Prom 5 miler for me (I needed it for my hat!) and Mel last night. Sunny, but with a cold wind. We ran and finished together and we were pleased with our time. It wouldn’t have been right if we had left without fish and chips and I think we earned it. Thanks Mel for your company.
Summer 5k Series
From Tim: Thanks very much for your help and support this pass six months with the 5K series. I hope you have enjoyed it. Thanks especially to all the behind the scenes goings on. My two mentors Graham Still and Lindsay Saunders for their guidance and support. June Moule for her tireless work getting the camps licence agreed to. Phil MacQuaid with the trailer and Richard Clayton for taking on the Chief Marshal position and of course the cake ladies and makers. These events would not happen without all your support.
Special thanks to Chris Greengrow for organising our main sponsor, Battens Solicitors, who provided a donation towards the race prizes plus some of the gifts handed out at the last race. Ashley Gingell for supplying the cheese donated by Norseland (was Ilchester Cheese) used as spot prizes at each race.
A few facts about this year. All the feedback I have had has been good. We had over 770 individual runners over the six race series with the farthest travelled coming from Madrid. Don't think it was just for our event. We also had a 16 year old Paralympic runner at two races who went on to run in Paris.
Fastest times this year were Simon Fox – 14:58 from Exeter Harriers and Page Quinn Torbay AAC – 16:37. Joe Allen won the male series with Joseph Keen – YTRRC in 2nd. Again Gill Pearson – YTRRC was the ladies winner.
Please for our club events if you are a club member and not in your first year of membership please ask the race director or chief marshal if you can race.
Don’t forget Santa Dash in December then it all starts again next year with the Easter Bunny and 5K Series.
From Adam Holland: Yeovilton 5K Summer
I’ve been wanting to do this event for some time now as I was told it was flat and fast. So I took this opportunity to head to Yeovil and check out the event. I got there early which gave me time to walk around the course to remind myself what it looks like because I have been around it during the Yeovil marathon which was 5 years ago, I remember 7 years ago crossing the finish line with my daughter Eva. As I took in the view I video-called my daughter Ottilie and we did her spelling game together. Time flew by and it wasn’t long until the start and I chatted with a few people on the way down to the start. We had a 1 minute silence before the start and as soon as the road was clear, they rushed us onto the start line and sent us on our way. 3-2-1 go! I wasn’t expecting to take the lead as I was told it was a fast course so I thought there would be lots of fast runners. I followed the road which was more or less straight for over half a mile before a sharp left turn. I had Luke right on my tail and I did feel like he was going to kick my heels at some point because he was really close (which never happened). At about the 1-mile mark I was running into the headwind with Luke following behind me and then we turned left directly into the headwind. I found it quite hard work but I just tried to power through. As we came out of the headwinds to turn left about the halfway mark Luke overtook me and I knew I couldn’t keep up with him but I was going to try. I could see a gap behind me so I didn’t need to worry about that, but as we got closer to the finish, I was slowing up and Luke was keeping pace. I imagined I would be around 16 minutes after the weekend marathon, but I surprised myself by being 5 seconds outside my PB finished 2nd in 15.23 and Luke won in 15.13. The next person behind me was about 23 seconds. 6 of us were under 16 minutes and 20 people were under 17 minutes altogether. I recognise so many people finishing from several different clubs and it was great to see lots from Southwest roadrunners. We are very lucky it didn’t rain and I’m already looking forward to having a go at this event again next year. Highly recommended! Afterwards, they did their presentation for the series and age category winners on the day. There was cake available for donations and one thing which I’ve never seen at a race before is Yorkshire puddings with sausage and something else with it (I may have had one of them).
PUB RUN – MILBORNE PORT – (12TH SEPTEMBER 2024)
From Mark: It was cool and sunny and a great evening for running. There were nine of us tonight, comprising Rob’s group (Rob, Kirsty, and myself), Alison’s group (Alison, Claire, and Colin), plus Phil, Ann, and Guy running alone. Leaving the pub, we ran westwards, then north through Milborne Port, and made our way to the thatched cottages at New Town. Going off-road we ran through a field of tall maize, out to Vartenham hill, and turned right. A cross country run along the ridge followed, and we joined the road at the railway bridge. We followed the railway line north eastwards, and veered off to Milborne Wick. We slogged up past the water wheel and duck ponds, and reached Bomer’s bridge. Avoiding the woods, we ran along Shoredown lane with its hills. Turning right at the end, we continued past the woods to the ridge, and onto the steep descent down Wheathill lane. With the sun setting, the views from the ridge westwards over Milborne Port and beyond were stunning. After the steep descent we cruised back into Milborne Port, and followed paths back to the Main road. To make up some more distance we ran a loop past the church and back to the public car park. Thanks Rob and Alison for organising, and Rob for the enjoyable run.
