The Last Summer Runs
Released On 27th Oct 2024
The Stickler
From Matt: Our heroes got up at the crack of dawn...
Then Yunmi Jang tried tagging "the Stickler" which is why in her post its mentioned FIVE times
The Stickler is well known as the most difficult race on the calendar, but usually draws a good YTTRC crowd, but it appears everyone else was taking the easy option with other races (like the Hill Fort thingy).
20 mins crossing the road and off to the start! BANG! We're running. Up the road to the first hill (The Stickle Path) then Okeford Beacon is passed and most of the mist has dispersed. Anyone running with a long sleeve top has stripped off down to just the club vest! Free speed courtesy of gravity means Matt's mile time is half that of the mile going up!
Yunmi Jang has sped off into the distance and looks like she's on for first YTRRC! Hod Hill is next which is a Hill Fort - Can you imagine charging up there and then having to fight???
On to Hambledon Hill via a blatantly stupid chalk path that resembles the North face of the Eiger. Giving up isn't really an option as we've passed half way but faking a medical emergency does cross one's mind!
Finally the third Peak is reached and the views across Dorset are amazing. Breakneck speed back down means lots of places are caught and passed, then you wonder exactly how you're going to stop at the bottom. Bounce off the hedge and then a flat mile or so across water logged fields (not flooded this year) and the finish line approaches with Honeybuns cakes - Yum!
So, three hills and we only had tears twice (luckily Yunmi Jang was ahead and didn't see that). But Yunmi was indeed first YTRRC, with Matt first male YTRRC.
Good to see ex-member Lee Holloway in action, but Terry Byrne was sadly missed because I know this is one of his favourite races.
Grand Canal Canter Marathon
From Taryn: Grand canal canter Tiverton DONE with Christine Greengrow A little chilly and misty to start with but the most beautiful course along the canal around 7m and back to the start! And for the marathon’ do it all again ’! We did tire I had some cramp- we found a bridge named after Chris’s work- Battens bridge- plenty of distractions even a field of pumpkins- medal lovely now to rest a while.
SCAVENGER HUNT 29/12/24

NEXT SOCIAL HIKE AT LYME REGIS
From Mark: I am doing another social hike on Sunday 15th December, if anyone would like to join me.
Again, we will meet at Uplyme Village Hall at 10am. Park to the right of the hall and please leave a small donation (1 or 2 pounds).
I'm proposing to do a different route which will incorporate Rocombe, Harcombe, and maybe the disused railway viaduct. We will head for the sea front or town for lunch, before heading back to the village hall. I will post a reminder nearer the time.
PUB RUN – HARDINGTON MANDEVILLE – (24th OCTOBER 2024)
From Mark: There were just three of us tonight in the not so fast group (Louise, JC, and myself). We ran an anti-clockwise loop, firstly climbing the hill through Oil Moor. At the top we turned left and continued a gradual climb along Ridge Lane. There was a lot of mud on the road. At the western end, we turned left, and descended. Dogs barked ahead of us in the darkness. We climbed Partway Lane, and turned left at the top. We took a right fork, and met Phil and Ann coming towards us. We continued along the southern edge of Hardington Mandeville, heading towards East Coker. We took the second left turn, and descended through Lyatts, and returned to Hardington Moor. Turning left we ran the couple of hundred yards back to the pub.
After, nine of us had the meal in the pub. Thanks Phil for organising.
